Chapter 5: "My Programs" with THREE MUSIC VIDEOS by Barbara

At first I was a puppeteer, but I did not like being back behind the puppet theatre. I wanted to be out in front with the audience. (I already told you that I was a SHOW-OFF!) Consequently, I studied ventriloquism. Not having the funds for a ventriloquist figure, I set out to make my own.

This is Granny Pringle, the first ventriloquist puppet that I made. She was NOT SUPPOSED to be a grandmother, but I put her mouth in wrong and it looked like she didn't have any teeth! In this program Granny and I were teaching "The Wordless Book". The song we sang was: "Your heart is dark with sin, until the Savior comes in. His precious blood, you know, can wash you white as snow. And in God's Word we're told, you'll walk the streets of gold. To grow in Christ each day, just read the Bible and pray."

Since this photo was taken over 25 years ago, THIS Granny eventually wore out. As I have done with so many of my characters, I made her over again. You can see her "face-lift" in Chapter 7: "Television". Most of the puppets had to be made over in l975 after they "drowned" in a church basement, waiting for a program the next day. They were lying on burgundy material on the floor, so many of their faces turned red! Yes, I cried for a little while, but then I got busy and started making them over. I put them on picnic tables in our yard, trying to dry them out and people would stop to see if I was having a yard sale!

This photo is of an outdoor Vacation Bible School called "Joy Club". Here is Granny again, in a different outfit. As a note of interest, when I needed her to wear a different outfit, I didn't change her clothes, I changed her whole BODY!

Church committees began calling and asking me to do programs, especially Mother/Daughter Banquets. It was VERY difficult for me as I was still suffering from my hypoglycemic fatigue, and my candida yeast infections. But, the Lord would sing, "Children, Go Where I Send You" to me, and I would go, although often reluctantly.

This was a Valentine Program at our local Methodist Church. The puppets that Patti and Peggy are holding are "Sissy" and "Sassy", who are wearing dresses that the girls had outgrown. People always wanted the girls to come and perform with me. I always let them make the choice themselves, but I wasn't beyond bribing them.

When Patti was in kindergarten she brought home a picture of a "pretty clown" that she found in her "Weekly Reader". (I STILL have that picture in a scrapbook.) That was the "make-up" inspiration for this picture of me holding George. Note the harmonica hanging from my neck. I have fourteen harmonicas that I play like that now--you have to have a different one for every key that you play in. This photo was taken in one of the many nursing home programs that I have done. In this particular skit, George tells the audience how a rope can be a weather gauge. You stick it out the window and if it gets wet, you know it is raining. If it blows back and forth, you know it's windy. George, like Granny, eventually wore out. You can see how he looks today when you visit the chapter called "Television". You will find George sitting on my big brown dog.

This was my "clown-look" in l976. Once I fell down in a program while roller skating and playing the guitar, but, oh, well...Every mistake is just "part of the act" and nobody knows if it wasn't planned that way.

Of course, Patti and Peggy had clown outfits, too...and cowgirl outfits...and indian outfits...and southern belle outfits. In this photo I'm holding Muffin, our Schnauzer who did tricks. Don and I have had seventeen dogs in our 40 years of marriage (all the time living in funeral homes where they had to be kept QUIET)! Whew! The girls and I also had two doves that we made appear and disappear with gospel magic. Then there were the rabbits and the turtles...

This was Chief Run-A-Muck of the Whip-A-Kid Tribe. (Wow! Because of "political correctness" a person would never get away with that today! I can't even get away with having the Chief talk "Indian Talk" any more.) I made the Chief over three times. This one I gave away in a ventriloquist contest at a week of camp one year. The current one can be found in the "Television" chapter. Also notice all of the props. The puppets would bring out props to illustrate what they thought was the "Greatest Gift". The correct answer, of course, was (and IS) "JESUS"!

Below is a classroom program that I did in the spring of l990. "Baby Ruthie" and I sing "The Junk Food Car" for a group of second graders."

And we can't forget the musical instruments. Here at the keyboard, Professor Lester and I sing and play for our audience. I already mentioned that I play trumpet and harmonicas. Other instruments that I play "at" are ukulele, recorder, omnichord, banjo, mandolin, violin, and flute (very badly).

Below is a sample of me playing my banjo and harmonica, plus a magic trick with "Snowy", one of our pet doves. The children lived across the street and came over to "play". The song is "Wings of a Dove".

In my book I wrote that I always wanted to be famous, as many people do. The Lord has said to me, "Barbara, if you would have been as beautiful as you would have liked and as talented as you would have liked, then the 'world' would have had you--but I want you!" And OH! MY GOODNESS! To think that the the Lord of Heaven and earth wants US (YOU, reader, YOU and I)! What a WONDER! What a MARVEL! In the words of the old song, "Who could ask for anything more?"
