Chapter 10: "Life in the 21st Century"

********************

This chapter used to be called "FREE BOOK". Since I started this website in 1998, I have mailed hundreds of copies of my autobiography (pictured below) to those requesting it. Unfortunately, my supply is now depleted so I am having to withdraw the offer.

In the photo above, I am reading my autobiography to Chief Run-A-Muck. The photo below is the same one that is on the back cover of the book. The "characters" pictured are (back row) Jeke, me, and Professor Lester. In the front are Baby Ruth (named after the candy bar) and Suzie Spacecase.

Following is an article that appeared in our daily paper:

Mansion offers elegant atmosphere for funeral home
By ROSEMARY HORVATH,
Sun Staff Writer
"The Morning Sun"

Don Dewey grabbed the shovel and started slicing through the inch or so of snow covering the walkway leading to one of the town's few stately mansions.

Friends and relatives were starting to arrive to pay respects to their deceased loved one inside the Dewey Funeral Home, where the upper floors are the Dewey's private residence. Just as Dewey makes the approach to the entrance easier, most of his life he's been devoted to clearing away obstacles from those mourning a death.

Dewey, 65, has been a second-generation licensed funeral director for 40 years. He and his wife Barbara, who once taught English and Spanish at the local high school, have been partners in life for 41 years.

They opened the Dewey Funeral Home in 1980 after refurbishing the building, work done mostly by Dewey himself. The property encompasses nearly a city block. The building with three floors and a basement is 50,000 square feet.

Francis King built the home in 1904. He was vice president of First State Bank and vice president of a local manufacturing company. He was the city's alderman and mayor who went on to serve the state in the senate in 1913. His wife, Louisa Yeomans King, was an internationally known horticulturist.

What is now a parking lot once was a grand English garden gracing the grounds of the 43-room English Tudor mansion.

The house was added unto in 1938 and sold the next year to a life insurance company which converted it into a retirement home for women. The property had once been gifted to the local school district and turned into offices for school officials.

When the Deweys bought the property in 1979, the house was barely visible from the street. It stood behind a wall of thick shrubbery left unattended for several years. Their project lasted nearly two years. Dewey is responsible for much of the restoration. Upon completion, the Deweys moved their funeral home from the one they had operated three blocks away.

Most days begin with Dewey joining friends for coffee at the Main Cafe, a downtown gathering place for local businessmen and some retirees. Asked how long he'd had this routine, Dewey replied, "Forever. It's where I get all the local news and gossip."

Being one of the few local morticians around means "confinement," for the couple. He said, "Even when you aren't busy, you've got to be around in case someone calls."

Pagers and cell phones have increased his mobility. Even so, he and his wife feel compelled to have at least one of them stay close to home to field calls most of the time. "If you're going to be a funeral director, you have to live it 24 hours a day, seven days a week," Dewey frequently explains when describing his profession. It's an explanation he gives for why so many younger people prefer working in a large city where funeral homes have several morticians. The divide the responsibilities and schedules to make normal lives for themselves, or they get out of the business after a few years.

Dewey, however, has settled in to the routine of the demanding career and has found ways to balance his hobbies with his obligations.

His second-floor office is crowded with books, papers and family photos. A shelf encircling the upper wall is lined with framed photographs showing Dewey posing with various game animals. The head of the caribou he shot in Quebec, 500 miles from the Artic Circle, hangs mounted with other whitetail deer heads. Dewey avidly hunts with a bow, muzzle loader or rifle. He has a hunting ranch with a few hundred acres around 45 minutes north of the funeral home, close enough to steal away for an afternoon, he said.

A Rotarian for 38 years, he was given its highest honor, a Paul Harris Fellow from Rotarians International.

Don and Barbara have developed a system for when family members sit down to give a history of a loved one. Don asks the questions while Barbara takes notes. Using her laptop, she quickly types up an obituary for the family to proofread before faxing it for publication.

Dewey takes care of paperwork required by law when administering to a family. He prepares a death certificate for a doctor to sign with the cause of death. He goes to the county court house to get certified copies of a death certificate. He also notifies Social Security and acquires a permit for burial.

After high school, Dewey graduated from Ferris State University and Wisconsin Institute of Mortuary Science, where Barbara taught in the public schools while Don attended classes.

A call from a family member, hospital or nursing home beckons Dewey at any time. He removes a dead body oftentimes alone. Embalming begins right away, a method used to disinfect and preserve the remains. Dewey has embalmed 8,000 bodies in his career, including both parents and two brothers. It isn't so much that he's able to detach himself from the job at the end; it's more that he wants the job done right, he said.

The quality of product has improved. It preserves the body longer. The old chemicals used to be harsh. Chemists work on improving embalming fluids all the time, he said.

Dewey grew up in funeral homes. He and his five siblings all had jobs at their father's funeral home on Woodworth Street, also the family residence. He's been a part of the business so long, he recalls when it was customary to have a wake inside the residence of the deceased. In subsequent years, viewings could last from 9:00 a.m to 9:00 p.m. over three days.

The Deweys assist families on deciding on a type of funeral service. This might take a few hours.

"I have to explain everything," he said. "A family has a lot of choices. Some don't have a visitation at all."

Barbara once used her vitality to entertain families as a puppeteer and ventriloquist. She stopped about five years ago when she started working full-time with her husband.

She has hundreds of handmade characters and puppets that she has collected displayed on the third floor of the funeral home, which she calls her "puppet museum". Some of her characters fill a room downstairs set up for children who need to be entertained while their parents take care of business.
