Chapter 11: "The Secrets Of Happiness"

So you want to know the secrets of happiness. Well, believe me, you have come to the right place, because I have the secrets and I will share them with you.

In my "Condensed Version" I told you how to become a Christian, but I will tell you again. Kneel down and tell God that you believe that Jesus Christ is His only Son that He sent to earth to die on the cross to pay for your (our) sins. Tell God that you are SORRY for your sins, and ask Him to forgive you. Ask Jesus to come into your life and be your Savior. THIS IS THE MAIN KEY TO HAPPINESS! The next thing that you need to do is to tell someone. Tell ME if you would like to. Click on the "Email Us" section at your upper left, and write to me. You will also need to be baptized.

Next, the Bible instructs us to "Grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ." To grow, you need to read the Bible and pray each day. You also need to attend church each week. I will be very glad to help you, so PLEASE contact me.

Let me tell you WHY I have a right to give you "The Secrets of Happiness!" First of all, the Bible says, "Let the older women teach the younger ones." Secondly, forty years ago I asked the Lord Jesus Christ to be my Savior, and I have walked with Him all of these years. Next, I been married to the SAME man for forty-three years--"For better or for worse." Last of all, I have been searching for the secrets of happiness my entire life and truly believe that I have found them!

I learned some more secrets of happiness when I took a two year training course in counseling from Dr. Wm. Glasser who teaches Reality Therapy. I learned that, in order to be happy, a person has to have his or her BASIC NEEDS met. (This is in addition to the very basic physical needs of air, sun, sleep, water, food, clothing, and shelter.) The BASIC (emotional and mental) NEEDS are: LOVE, POWER (feeling good about one's self in regards to one's job or station in life), FREEDOM, AND FUN. This teaching is very good, and very true, but there are more (and better) secrets yet.

The Life Principles Institute of Redmond, Washington teaches the very best "Secrets" that I have ever found. They are "THE FOUR LEVELS OF HAPPINESS." I saw this taught a number of times on television, and also bought their videos. (Toll-free: 877-345-LIFE) I took notes on this study, and will share them with you here.

The first (lowest) level of happiness is what they call, "Instant Gratification". It is very external and involves physical pleasure and possessions, including food, relationships, etc. People are rarely happy living only on level one. They ask, "With all that I have, why am I NOT happy? Is this all there is to life?"

The second level is called "Personal Achievement". It involves a sense of self: achievement, popularity, self-esteem, and ego. Most people in the United States live on happiness levels 1 and 2. They ask themselves, "Why am I STILL not happy, even though I have achieved?" This is because achievement alone does NOT bring happiness. There is always the nagging that we have to achieve MORE status, make MORE money (and MORE puppets +_+). On level two, there is jealousy, anger, feelings of inferiority and superiority, blaming, suspicion, and contempt.

Level three is called, "Living for Others". It is giving of oneself in loving service to and for others. This can be done either for God/Jesus or just (as an example) Oprah's "Random Acts of Kindness." On this level a person wants to make the world a better place. It is characterized by unselfishness and lack of ego. The problem with THIS level is that there is so MUCH to do that it is overwhelming and it is hard to even make a dent in all that needs doing. Much happiness can be found on this level, but MUCH MORE can be found on level four.

Level four is called, "Living for God". It is an intimate relationship with Jesus Christ. The person gives God control of the three lower levels, actually surrendering to God one's entire life. The Bible says, "The heart is restless until it rests in Thee (God)." "My child, give Me (God) thine heart." It is total surrender to God, with the prayer, "Thy will be done." Note to you who are suffering, this is the level for you! The purpose of suffering is found in this level. Suffering people can live on level four by offering their suffering to God as a prayer for others. I try very hard to live on this level, and I am VERY HAPPY, as is my husband, as you might imagine. :)

You can stop right here, because if you live on Level Four, you will be happy. However, if you are interested in learning MORE about happiness, read on!

There is a wonderful book called, THE INTERIOR CASTLE by Teresa of Avila. It was originally written in Spanish, many years ago. Teresa discusses a person's relationship with God through prayer. She refers to a person's growth in prayer as "The Seven Mansions." Here they are:

Mansion 1. (The first and lowest mansion) Living the Gospel generously.

Mansion 2. Being humble, patient, loving, and obedient.

Mansion 3. Praying discursively (by way of meditation).

(Note that Mansions 4 through 7 are infused contemplative prayer.)

Mansion 4. Advanced mental prayer.

Mansion 5. Full union prayer--absorption in God is so deep that there are no distractions.

Mansion 6. Ecstatic prayer--a deep deep love for God. (Spiritual ecstasy that is vastly superior to ecstasy from drugs.)

Mansion 7. Transforming union prayer, the highest level of prayer. This is spiritual marriage of the soul with God--a profound union with God.
