"TOTAL HEALTH"--HYPOGLYCEMIA (LOW BLOOD SUGAR)

Dear Readers,

Chances are very great that you have heard of hypoglycemia, also known as low blood sugar. When I was born in 1939, it had not been discovered. I had many of the symptoms, however. I first heard about hypoglycemia in the mid-70's. It was a wonderful discovery and answered many of my questions about my sugar-starch cravings, extreme fatigue, and inability to stay on a diet. Hypoglycemia is often described as "upside-down diabetes". Diabetes is called hyperglycemia, "hyper" meaning "too much" and hypoglycemia means "too little". A person with hypoglycemia has too little blood sugar. Actually, he or she has too much and then too little, with the cycle repeating over and over. Although hypoglycemia can occasionally be caused by a faulty pancreas, it is generally caused by weak adrenal glands, and often, a low thyroid. Hypoglycemia is the opposite of diabetes. With diabetes, a person's pancreas does not put out insulin. With hypoglycemia, the pancreas puts out too much insulin. When a person eats something sweet, (sometimes even fruit) the blood sugar becomes high, signaling the pancreas that it needs insulin. The insulin takes the excess sugar out of the blood and stores it as glycogen in the liver. (Note that when the liver gets full, the glycogen is stored as fat in all of those areas of the body that you already know about.) When the pancreas puts out more and more insulin until so much blood sugar is removed, that low blood sugar results it causes the hypoglycemic person to become very fatigued. (I have even fainted.) A low blood sugar attack would often cause me to fall asleep for ten minutes or so and wake up starving. Before I found out what was happening to me, I would generally look for a quick sweet, salty, or starchy snack to make myself feel better. Then the cycle would start over. I'd eat more and more and become more and more tired. This cycle can also cause emotional and mental problems. (I had plenty of those.) Falling blood sugar levels are very hard on the whole body.

SYMPTOMS OF HYPOGLYCEMIA

In addition to fatigue (usually relieved by eating) other symptoms of a low blood sugar condition are crying spells, depression, moodiness, extreme hunger, insomnia, fearfulness, lack of concentration, inability to make decisions, poor memory, frequent worry, headaches, reduced sex drive, feelings of insecurity or low self-image, being highly emotional, having fits of anger, magnifying insignificant events, craving sweets (candy, desserts, pop), craving starches (bread, pasta, potatoes, rice, or beans), consuming alcohol, drinking more than three cups of coffee or cola daily, unable to work well under pressure, sleepiness or drowsiness during the day or after meals, lack of energy, reduced initiative, inability to get started in the morning, wanting to eat when nervous, stomach cramps or "nervous stomach", allergies, asthma, hay fever, skin rash, sinus trouble, suicidal thoughts or tendencies, boredom, nightmares or bad dreams, irritablity before meals, rapid heartbeat (palpitations), shakiness inside when hungry, feeling faint if meal is delayed, ulcers, gastritis, chronic indigestion, abdominal bloating, cold hands or feet, blurred vision, bleeding gums, dizziness, giddiness, or light-headedness, awareness of breathing heavily, easily bruised, incoordination (drop or bump into things), sweating excessively, unsocial or antisocial behavior, muscle twitching or cramps, skin aches or itches, phobias (excessive fear of some thing or situation), trembling (shaking) of the hands, and convulsions.

Low blood sugar can be caused by candida albicans, which will be discussed in the next section. Since candida can cause havoc within the whole body, it can also cause (or at least aggravate) hypoglycemia. You will notice that many symptoms of candida and hypoglycemia are the same. Actually, hypoglycemia is a "traveling companion" to many diseases.

HELP FOR HYPOGLYCEMIA

A supplement that has stabilized my blood sugar level is a glandular combination called "Bioglycozyme". I also take raw adrenals, which are included in "Bioglycozyme". Some of the herbs for low blood sugar are licorice root and golden seal herb. Thyroid supplementation, as you will read about in a later section has also been a tremendous help. These supplements (especially the herbs) should be taken daily. They can also be taken after a person eats or drinks something that lowers his or her blood sugar. They will generally ward off the hypoglycemic attack in much the same way that the insulin helps the diabetic. Note that I hesitate to give out that information in fear of encouraging people to consume refined sugar products and then take the supplements to avoid the symptoms. Sugar is bad for everyone. However, there are times when temptation gets the best of us and we need need something to prevent a low blood sugar attack from ruining our day. When I have "fallen off the wagon" too frequently, my body tells me about it with emotional problems and, at times sore throats. (Refined sugar lowers the body's immune system.) I can usually ward off a sore throat or a cold with Thymus and Vitamin C within a few hours. Speaking of colds, they shouldn't be cursed, as they are one of the body's ways of cleaning itself out. (One should not take decongestants or cough medicine, however, because they stop the body's cleansing). The flu and fevers are also the body's way of "cleaning house".

At this point in my life, I have been on SO MANY DIFFERENT eating plans that I take the things that have worked for me and put them together in my own personal plan. The Bible says, "Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling." That sort of describes what I am talking about. My digestive system is so worn out from years of abuse, that I find that I have the most energy when I fast throughout the day on fresh lemon water with a small amount of "Sweet'nLow", and then have a small protein meal at night.
